TTR (Thermal Transfer Ribbons)

A thermal transfer printer prints by melting a coating of ribbon so that it stays glued to the material on which the print is being applied. Printing this way is fast, accurate and instantly dry. The printing of bar-codes and date-codes are the most common uses.

Columbia Ribbon began making thermal transfer ribbons in 1987 and since then has established a reputation as an innovator and supplier of top quality thermal transfer ribbons for wide and diverse applications utilizing virtually any thermal transfer printer.

We have a wide range of ‘standard’ ribbon formulae and can supply ribbons to fulfill the majority of demands for regular thermal transfer printing. As well as the usual black ink, we also offer a wide range of other colours.

Also, we are always keen to hear from customers with new or unusual applications as we are invariably able to develop products to match customers’ requirements. Columbia Ribbon employs its own full time Chemist for the development of specific new ribbons.

We have a highly skilled team to ensure that all enquiries and orders are dealt with promptly ensuring you get excellent service and above all the ‘right ribbon for the job’

There are three basic types of thermal transfer ribbon and the right type to use depends on the printer and the material onto which the printing is being applied.

Wax Ribbons

Typically this is the most economical form of TTR ribbon. Wax is used where little physical contact is made with the label and smudge and scratch resistance are not a major consideration. Wax ribbons require the least energy and give the darkest print.

Wax ribbons are generally used on vellum and coated papers.

Wax Resin Ribbons

Although called wax resin, the resin content is higher than that of wax. This gives a much improved smudge resistance than wax and a reasonably good scratch resistance.

Wax resin ribbons will print onto coated paper and certain synthetic materials giving good 90 degree barcodes.

Resin Ribbons

These ribbons have no wax content and as such have a very high degree of scratch and smudge resistance. A typical application would be Haz Chem Labels and any other application where abrasion resistance is critical.

Resin ribbons are generally used to print onto high gloss paper or synthetic materials and need more energy to give the required print quality. For example, specific resin based ribbons are used for fabric care labels and rating boards.

For more details of our range of ribbons, have a look at the TTR Formulations page.

ALL Columbia ribbons have a specially designed Slip Coat to prevent head damage to the printers.
