MICR Safety Data Sheet
HEALTH AND SAFETY DATA SHEET for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition Transfer Ribbons
According to 91/155/EEC
Product: MICR (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) Transfer Ribbons
1. COMPOSITION/INGREDIENTS
Columbia MICR ink formulae are a mixture of natural oils, synthetic resins and waxes, combined with iron oxide. Small traces of anti-oxidants and other inert materials are also present. Indelible and Fluorescent versions additionally contain small quantities of dyes and pigments. The mixture is coated onto a polyethylene base and is usually dispensed from inert plastic or cardboard cores.
2. POSSIBLE HAZARDS
If burnt, a decomposition gas containing carbon dioxide is produced as part of the decomposition products.
Under normal conditions, the ingredients may be considered harmless.
3. FIRST AID MEASURES
Skin contact: Wash with soap and water.
Eye contact: Wash with copious quantities of water.
Ingestion: Rinse mouth immediately, and drink plenty of water.
4. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Combustion products contain carbon dioxide. Columbia MICR Ribbons are not considered to be normally flammable.
5. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Personal precautions: After contact, wash skin with soap and water. Do not ingest.
Environmental disposal: Wipe or sweep up, and place waste and soiled material in bags for normal disposal
Special precautions: None necessary.
6. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Handling: No special precautions necessary. Storage: Store away from excessive heat.
7. EXPOSURE CONTROLS AND PERSONAL PROTECTION
Personal protection equipment: None required. General safety measures: Wash after use with soap and water.
8. PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Form: Clean, dry plastic ribbon on a core. Colour: Black. Odour: Slight odour of resins and residual solvents.
Melting point: >100° Celsius. Flash point: >100° Celsius
Explosion hazard: None. Vapour pressure: N/A. Solubility in water: Immiscible
9. SOLUBILITY AND REACTIVITY
The product will melt and burn reluctantly in a flame.
10. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
There are no known dangers resulting from skin contact, eye contact, ingestion or long term exposure.
